Q&A with Jonathan Dodson

Evan: Tell us about yourself?

Jonathan: I’m married to Robie, my strong, joyful, wise wife of 22 years. We have three children, two teens and an 11 year old, and founded City Life Church with a small group of people in 2006, where I serve as Lead Pastor. I also founded gcdiscipleship.com a ministry that seeks to equip writers and disciples to make, mature, and multiply disciples of Jesus. I frequently write articles and books on various topics ranging from practical theology to cultural apologetics. I love science fiction, going for walks, and listening to The War on Drugs.

Evan: What led to writing this book?

Jonathan: As I watched pastors and ministry leaders get crushed by an onslaught of criticism, covid ministry, and perplexing culture wars, I wanted to write a book that would help them navigate these divisive times without hardening or quitting. After writing 70% of the book, I hit a wall myself and had to take a two month break to mourn my own losses and heal. I was met powerfully by the weeping Christ who is acquainted with our sorrows and comforts like no other. Toward the end of that time, I finished the book. In a sense, it is a flaming arrow sent into the darkness of trial with the hope that it will encourage, strengthen, and comfort everyone who reads it with the unmatched grace of our Lord Jesus.
