Overview
Biblical Theology was published in March 2023 by Crossway Publishers. Andreas Köstenberger and Gregory Goswell coauthored this volume together. It is 1016 pages long and the bibliography is over 100 pages! Dr. Goswell’s expertise is in the Old Testament while Dr. Köstenberger’s expertise is in the New Testament. It is noted in the beginning pages of this work that “writing a Biblical theology is no small endeavor” (pg. xxv). This work covers many things under the umbrella of Biblical Theology. In Chapter 1, they work to define and address their approach to Biblical Theology as they do in the concluding chapter. Throughout Biblical Theology, these scholars show inter-canonical connections with other books of the Bible. This is one of the aspects I really like about this book as well as the final chapter looking at a variety of theological themes. Biblical Theology has chapters on the order of the books in the New Testament Canon and the relationship between the testaments with quotations used for OT in the NT book as well. These scholars spend time on themes, ethics, and place for every book of the Bible. They show how it fits within the grand story of Scripture. In the concluding chapter, they spend time on 10 themes in the OT, 11 in the NT and the entire Bible, 8 ethical themes in the OT, 8 ethical themes in the NT and Bible, and the Biblical Storyline. If you are interested in the overall storyline of Scripture and looking at detailed themes/ethics that further show the grand story, this book is for you. This is a helpful volume in which pastors, seminary students, and Sunday school teachers need to make accessible on their shelves. If you are threatened by the page count of this volume, don’t be! The Scripture index and subject index help with the page count. I don’t think there is a wasted page among these 1000 pages. This is going to be a useful resource for years to come. If your pastor does not have this on his shelf or you are looking to get something for a Sunday school teacher, pick up this volume for them!

Endorsement from Doug Moo
“Köstenberger and Goswell’s Biblical Theology is a remarkably comprehensive treatment. It offers both a bird’s-eye view—giving more attention than is often done to the theological significance of the arrangement of the biblical books within the canon—and an ‘up close and personal view’ analyzing the theological contribution of each book of the Bible. The authors describe the ‘ethical’ significance and contribution to the storyline of Scripture of each book and each collection of books. This volume thus puts on clear display both the diversity and the unity of our single canonical volume.”
