Dr. Mohler is the president of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Below are his tweets from 6/14/22 regarding the Baptist Faith and Message and pastors. I thought this may be helpful to share on this medium for those interested regarding current conversations in the Southern Baptist Convention.
“In 2000 Southern Baptists overwhelmingly adopted the Baptist Faith & Message revision. We explicitly stated that we confess and believe together that “the office of pastor is limited to men as qualified by Scripture.” Southern Baptists knew what they were doing. Words matter.
The Southern Baptist Convention is a confessional body. Our confession is essential to how we know if a church is or is not in friendly cooperation with the SBC. The word pastor was chosen for its clarity among Southern Baptists.
Rick Warren has been kind to me, but if he has led his church in violation of our confession of faith, the act was entirely that of the pastor and his church. The SBC cannot order a local church on its doctrine. It has every right and power to define its own association.
History reveals that a church or denomination that loses conviction that “the office of pastor is limited to men as qualified by Scripture” will lose its doctrine and clarity on issues of sexuality and gender in all contexts. I pray that does not mark the SBC.”
